Leonardo da Vinci drew a pedal powered lathe in the late 1400's 3 and we see a similar adaptation to the grinding wheel in 1570 fig 2 4. Pedal power seems to be a later adaptation perhaps contemporary with attaching these machines to water and tread wheels. I can't say for sure weather pedal power existed earlier than Da Vinci or not.
